Today's Gospel Reading

Friday - 30 July
Matthew 13:54-58

Coming to his home town, Jesus taught the people in their synagogue in such a way that they were astonished and said, ‘Where did the man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers? This is the carpenter’s son, surely? Is not his mother the woman called Mary, and his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Jude? His sisters, too, are they not all here with us? So where did the man get it all?’ And they would not accept him. But Jesus said to them, ‘A prophet is only despised in his own country and in his own house’, and he did not work many miracles there because of their lack of faith.

From the Rule of St Benedict:

Prologue 1

Listen carefully to the master’s instructions, and attend to them with the ear of your heart. This is advice from a father who loves you; welcome it, and faithfully put it into practice.

Sensible advice from St Benedict! We all need to listen, to learn and to understand. We need to listen to those who know. Once instructed, Benedict does not say just, ‘Get on with it,’ he tells us to carry out our instructions enthusiastically.

Prayer

Loving God,
Help us to listen to those who can help us,
And also to those we perhaps would prefer
Not to listen to, but know we should.
Above all, help us to listen to your still, small voice
Which speaks to us at all times and in all places
If only we listen.
Amen.
St Scholastica and
St Benedict, pray for us.
